Introducing

SeisTrain Geophysical Training

S

eisTrain is a cost-effective course designed to train persons in the methods, skills and attributes required for the competent quality control of the data acquisition of a seismic exploration crew i.e. to train persons to fill the role a Seismic Company Site Representative (CSR), often referred to as a Seismic Acquisition Supervisor or colloquially known as a ‘bird-dog’.

This comprehensive, modular program opens the door for your personnel, who will be already equipped with a basic knowledge of the seismic industry, to learn the technical and practical skills required to become a fully competent CSR.

The program covers both technical and HSE aspects relevant to seismic acquisition thus producing CSRs with the overall rounded knowledgebase required to adequately perform the job. Technically the course covers all aspects of seismic acquisition, so that trainees understand the full acquisition process from survey positioning/navigation, through to in-field data processing.

The training covers both land and marine acquisition. The program focuses on the very latest technology and is regularly updated as new technology emerges to ensure training is up to date. Mentoring and tutoring by experienced CSRs is available on-site and remotely.

Effectively utilising

 the SeisTrain program

Oil companies

The program is primarily targeted at oil companies to train in-house personnel to be ready and capable to supervise their often infrequent seismic acquisition programs when needed, thus negating the requirement to employ outside consultants as CSRs.

Independent consultants

Technical and theoretical aspects of the course which do not require work in the field may also be useful for independent consultants or consultancies who would like to develop their own skills or those of their employees so as to provide the best CSRs available in the industry.

A range of candidates

The course can be tailored to fit candidates of different backgrounds, experience and prior knowledge. The full 24-month training program can therefore be adapted and reduced in length accordingly to fit the candidate’s existing skill set.

As there is a strong focus on the very latest technology the training can be tailored to the needs of experienced CSRs who may wish to expand their existing knowledge base.

Comprehensive & progressive

The training program is incorporated in a comprehensive online database which includes all training requirements, course levels and modules, and the tasks and objectives to be completed. Details of all participants and mentors are included in the database thus allowing for online tracking and assessment of progress for all participants.

The progressive ‘on-the-job’ learning method uses a tiered level structure split into individual subject modules.

Flexible & modular

The course is structured to allow a flexible learning approach for participants as operational conditions permit and candidates requirements vary.

This comprehensive, modular program consists of over 75 tasks distributed over 25 modules, and over 500 individual training objectives.

Theoretical & practical

The full 24-month course consists of 4 levels each to be completed theoretically within a 6-month period. Each level typically consists of 6 modules each incorporating theoretical learning and practical tasks.

The program can be tailored for 3,6,12 month training and can be flexible to the needs of the client.

Contemporary & future-proof

The level structure is designed for progressive learning of all operational aspects on the seismic crew becoming more detailed and complex as the level increases. A trainee therefore starts with the basics at Level 1, increasing his knowledge step by step until he reaches Level 4.

Technical modules focus on current technology that the trainee will work with in the field, along with new technology they may well encounter in the near future.

HSE modules focus primarily on the HSE management system implemented on the crew.

On-site

SeisTrain is designed as an “on the job” training program where trainees primarily develop their knowledge and skills in the field environment of a seismic crew.

Accessible learning resources

An extensive library of technical documentation is provided to assist this learning on the job and also allows trainees to study off-site to understand important theoretical fundamentals that are utilised in the field environment.

Easily adaptable

In the current climate with few seismic crews working the program can be adapted for remote/online theoretical training with the material available and online visual teaching/interactions/Q&A, etc. with a knowledgeable mentor who could simulate how things work in the field.

Well structured

Progress is measured using a screening method by an assigned mentor with the aim to achieve a consistent standard of skills and knowledge for all participants. A participant must, however, complete all modules within a specific training level before moving on to the next level. A comprehensive support system is available to address issues and modify the training structure be meet specific client requirements.

Flexible, easy access
Mentor and trainee dashboards, and a messaging system are available on the SeisTrain dashboard. Mentoring ideally should be face to face but the system will allow for remote mentoring if necessary, as is more conducive in the current climate.
Adaptable assessments
A mentor should either be an expert in the field of seismic acquisition, or at least be capable of understanding and assessing the assessment criteria of the course. If necessary a participant’s progress can be assessed by utilising two or more mentors with expertise in different fields.
Remote tutoring available
Remote tutoring is available using social media platforms like Skype, Zoom, Facebook, etc.
The course delivery and assessment system is therefore flexible, quick and easy to use.

Having looked at the program it is quite impressive! In fact, maybe all Chief Geophysicists should follow it as well! It is very well structured for graduate trainees and covers new technology also. The Nodal Operations modules are especially impressive, the module content is very technical and includes HSE.

This program has been expertly structured. The links to mentors, references to relevant resources and the work activities that need to be completed in order for the trainee to be capable of answering the questions – in-turn demonstrate that the requisite levels of knowledge and experience you/the organisation determine are necessary for the role have been attained. It is worthy of note that the program promotes trainees to “go find” – which is admirable. SeisTrain promotes value to the clients here, with the development of this material in today’s climate.

It is clear the functionality of the system is very well thought out, as are the modules and content. There is no doubting it would add to the development of some of our employees to have a structured training system such as this. I also like the HSE content and active involvement of the trainees to take full ownership of the training with both practical and theoretical modules.

This is a great learning platform for the industry!  The system is very intuitive  – I think I picked it up quite quickly – I like the left hand navigation menu where you can see all the items – course, mentors etc. A trainee can map and follow their own progress. A valuable product for the industry of today, embracing new technology in seismic data acquisition.
