Geophysical Training

S

eisTrain geophysical training enables your company to train its own staff, in-house, to become Seismic Company Site Representatives (CSR) with the flexibility of being either a 3,6,12 or 24 months course, and can also be tailored to the needs of the client.

This comprehensive, modular program opens the door for your personnel, who will be already equipped with a basic knowledge of the seismic industry, to learn the technical and practical skills required to become a fully competent CSR.

The program focuses on the very latest technology and can be tailored to the needs of existing CSRs that may wish to expand their existing knowledge-base. The SeisTrain program trains in-house personnel to be ready and capable to supervise seismic acquisition programs as required, eliminating the need to employ outside consultants as CSRs.

Not only does this represent a substantial long-term cost saving to any oil company, your staff will become fully conversant in crucial industry HSE legislation as well as the company’s own HSE management system.

Introducing

 The SeisTrain Program

Take the CSR Role In-house

The role of a Seismic Company Site Representative (CSR), often referred to as a Seismic Acquisition Supervisor or colloquially as a ‘bird-dog’, is to act as the bridging gap between Company and Contractor to ensure that both data quality and HSE are as per accepted industry standards.

Historically the role of a CSR has been filled by someone with many years experience working for a seismic contractor, who made the transition to a supervisory position.

Maximise Cost Efficiency

Seismic contractors have now by necessity moved to employing a  more cost effective work force with fewer people having the required experience and knowledge to become a CSR. This comes at a time when experienced supervisory skills on a seismic crew are even more important as can be seen from the increasing number of CSRs now requested by oil companies.

Where there used to be one CSR on a seismic crew, there are now typically two or three, with each focusing on different aspects of the operation (e.g. technical, HSE and survey/navigation).

Broaden Skills

The SeisTrain program aims to fill this gap by enabling persons with a basic knowledge of the seismic industry to learn the technical and practical skills required to become a competent CSR. It can be used by oil companies to train in-house and thus have their own personnel ready and capable to supervise their often infrequent seismic acquisition programs when needed.

This would then fully or partially negate the requirement to employ outside consultants as CSRs, thus saving costs.

Technical and theoretical aspects of the course which do not require work in the field may also be useful for independent consultants or consultancies who would like to develop their own skills or those of their employees so as to provide the best CSRs available in the industry.

Comprehensive

The SeisTrain course is designed to train persons in the methods, skills and attributes required for the competent quality control of the data acquisition of a seismic exploration crew operating on land. It also covers the basics of HSE management systems specific to seismic operations, which often take place in remote environments.

Technically the course covers all aspects of seismic acquisition, so that trainees understand the full acquisition process from survey positioning, through to in-field data processing.

In-house

SeisTrain is designed as an on-the-job training program, where trainees primarily develop their knowledge and skills in the field environment of a seismic crew. Technical documentation is provided to assist this learning on the job and also allows trainees to study off-site to understand important theoretical fundamentals  utilised in the field environment.

Detailed

The training program is incorporated in a comprehensive online database which includes all training requirements, course levels and modules, along with the tasks and objectives to be completed.

Details of all participants and mentors are included in the database, allowing for online tracking and assessment of progress for all participants.

Flexible

Although targeted as a 24-month training program, being modular in nature allows for progressive development as both operational conditions permit. Thus the course could be extended if necessary and even possibly be reduced in length depending on the trainee’s ability.

Measurable

Progress is measured using a screening method by an assigned mentor with the aim to achieve a consistent standard of skills and knowledge for all participants. A participant must, however, complete all modules within a specific training level before moving on to the next level.

Having looked at the program it is quite impressive! In fact, maybe all Chief Geophysicists should follow it as well! It is very well structured for graduate trainees and covers new technology also. The Nodal Operations modules are especially impressive, the module content is very technical and includes HSE.

This program has been expertly structured. The links to mentors, references to relevant resources and the work activities that need to be completed in order for the trainee to be capable of answering the questions – in-turn demonstrate that the requisite levels of knowledge and experience you/the organisation determine are necessary for the role have been attained. It is worthy of note that the program promotes trainees to “go find” – which is admirable. SeisTrain promotes value to the clients here, with the development of this material in today’s climate.

It is clear the functionality of the system is very well thought out, as are the modules and content. There is no doubting it would add to the development of some of our employees to have a structured training system such as this. I also like the HSE content and active involvement of the trainees to take full ownership of the training with both practical and theoretical modules.

This is a great learning platform for the industry!  The system is very intuitive  – I think I picked it up quite quickly – I like the left hand navigation menu where you can see all the items – course, mentors etc. A trainee can map and follow their own progress. A valuable product for the industry of today, embracing new technology in seismic data acquisition.

FAQs

 Our Frequently Asked Questions

The SeisTrain program primarily benefits oil companies, enabling them to train in-house personnel with the necessary skill set to supervise their own seismic acquisition programs.

Certain technical and theoretical parts of the
course could also be useful for independent consultancies or consultants looking to develop their own skills.

The course is designed to be completed inside 24 months. This can vary depending upon operational conditions and the participant’s base knowledge level and experience.

All details of the course, training requirements and participant progress is incorporated in a  comprehensive online database, accessible (with permission) to all interested parties.

There is no limitation, provided participants are suitably qualified and sufficient mentors are available to assess the participants.

A mentor should either be an expert in the field of seismic acquisition or at least be capable of understanding and assessing the assessment criteria of the course.

If necessary a participant’s progress could be assessed by utilising two or more mentors as specialists in their particular field.

SeisTrain provides a structured, on-the-job method of training personnel to become competent seismic Company Site Representatives inside two years.

Currently training is available for multi-source land seismic acquisition. Marine acquisition training is currently being written, along with further modules to include:

1. Nodes and Advanced Technology (Nodal and use of Drones) in Geophysical Operations.
2. Alternative Energy sources
3. Radios and Communication in the field
4. Quality Control and Quality Assurance
5. Vehicles and International Standards
6. Environmental and Stakeholder
7. HSE Management 3 (Advanced)
